Fairy Falls is a popular track during weekends and holidays. If you start on Mountain Rd, there is minimal parking but it's a lot quieter than if you start on Old Coach Rd. Take the Fairy Falls Track down for about 2km, avoid days where there has been heavy rain as this can be a slippery journey down if it is wet. At the bottom you will be greeted by the falls and can either turn back and return the way you came or head up the stairs for a swim in the waterhole. The journey upwards will have your legs burning but you'll be shaded by the forestry and every now and then get a good look out over the Waitakeres. Take a right on to Goodfellow Track for a smaller loop of Fairy Falls and then turn onto Old Coach Road Track for your trip down hill back to the start.
I've completed this track numerous times, once with a large group which took us 2h30m as we took some time out to have a swim and walk together as a group. The young ones may have trouble getting up the stairs so be prepared to offer piggy back rides on your way up.
