I had todays adventure all planned out, it was approximately a 10km loop and would take us about 4 hours. But we thought we'd pop in to the visitors centre to get the experts advice on if the loop was doable. She said no, it wouldn't work and gave us another track to try that'd take an hour. But we wanted something longer so she suggested go along this other track for 2 hours then come back. A quick team chat and we decided to be rebels, not listen and do the track I had originally planned. So off we went. None of us were really feeling it today but we strolled along regardless. 5 minutes in and we see a picnic bench. Snack time! Great start to the day. We carried on down Beverage Track a nice gravelled track made for mountain biking. Coming out to an opening that is Mackies Rest where you can look out to Lower Nihotupu Dam. Snack time again. Back to our feet we head down the track further coming out onto Huia Road, where we walked all the way down to the dam for yet another snack break. The plan from here was to head up Lower Nihotupu Dam Rd to get to Pipeline Tk and then Slip Tk which would take us back to the Arataki Visitors Centre. We reached Lower Nihotupu Rd only to find it was a private road and no public access was allowed. So we went up anyway and would jump in the bush if any cars drove past or look like we were lost. We head up the road trying not to act suspicious only to come to another sign this time gated saying no entry. Time to give in and head back the way we came. There was a small track we missed on the way which we got to catch on the way back which cut some of the boring Huia Road walk out. We made it back making sure we stopped at every rest stop on the way back for snacks.
