Lake Wainamu is the prefect place to take the family for the day. Just keep in mind you're walking through black sand which get scorching hot and you will need closed shoes if going in the middle of summer. Even then your shoes will fill with sand and weigh 2 kg's each by the time you get to the lake. It's a tiring walk for the young ones across the sand towards the lake but they'll think it's worth it once they are there. If you're thinking about doing the walk around the lake you'll be greeted by an amazing waterhole about half-to-three-quarters of the way around if you go anti-clockwise. The walk around is about 90minutes and is fairly flat so nice and easy. You'll want to make a stop at the watering hole and maybe even venture up alongside the waterfall to see a few more smaller falls and waatering holes. There's another track up here but that will need to be explored another day as I had to get these two youngins back to their parents before it got too late. There is no reception out here either, so if you're meeting people here know that you wont be able to call them when you arrive. This is the place I come for all my sand dune runs. Next time we'll be taking some boogie boards to make the most of the dunes! Oh and I think the kids had fun too.
Just another health and fitness professional putting in their 2 cents. 2 cents may be all you need one day.
